Updated: Jul 2, 2018

June, in all its glory!

Hi all, I have decided to begin a monthly gardening blog! Impressed? Well you might say "why start it in the middle of the year and not in January?". The answer is simple, why not?.....

My blog will be an uncensored account of the weekly ourcurrances of my garden and my clients gardens. The blog will vent frustration at eaten foliage, joy at the first sign of flowers and disappointment when various plants go over and look saggy and quite frankly awful!

I have been gardening for many years and have rough hands to prove it! I love gardening as a profession and as a hobby. I like to garden alone as I can totally switch off from life, bills, mortgages etc and truly become immersed in nature and its wonderful every changing and living environment.

My Top 5 plants for June!

Ok, so lets talk about June. This is an incredible month for flowers, un inhibited growth, wildlife activity, visual pleasure and scent! Here's just 5 (and I could name hundreds of plants that are absolutely singing now! The sun is shining and lets get out there and experience all England has to offer!

Philadelphus, scented and dreamy

While walking into town today and was treated to the heady and wonderfully intoxicating scent of Philadelphus. It was glorious to see, in fact, the Philadelphus and like a number of highly scent shrubs are indeed ignored and overlook until now! The profuse creamy white flowers were a sight to behold. It made me feel happy just smelly it on the breeze!

Philadelphus in its heavenly glory

Astrantia, tall and elegant

Another one of my favourite June flowering plant is Astrantia. These wonderful perennial border gems offer height, prolonged flowering and they range in colour from white right through to a beautiful deep wine colour. The achieve roughly hip height when in full flower. The dreamy flower heads are billowy and royal looking. The foliage is divided and bright green. They are clump forming and easier divided at anytime during there long flowering season. They really are a must have perennial in any border or garden planting scheme. They tolerate shade very comfortably but not deep shade. In deep shade they grow leggy and do not flower.

Glorious Astrantia

Roses, wonderful Roses.

The next hot, hot, hot June plant is the Rose. A truly glorious, English staple of beauty, tradition and reliability. Roses can be incorporated into any planting scheme and have many varied growing habits. The various species range from ground cover, to patio types, to rampant ramblers. Their flowering periods and scents vary greatly too. Roses can be utilised to enhance any garden situation, giving the visitor joy and happiness to see inside the delicate flower head and watching the bees drink the nectar they offer! With colours that quench everyones taste and palette these plants really are invaluable to any gardener.
